Greece: Athens marks Independence Day with massive military parade

Athens city centre emptied out on Tuesday for the traditional Independence Day military parade, with Greek Army’s Evzone guards (traditional elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army), military aircraft carries, and Leopard and S300 tanks participating in the march. Attended by Greek President Karolos Papoulias and other political and religious leaders, around 3,000 police officers are estimated to have been deployed to secure the area surrounding Syntagma Square ahead of the parade.
