Rudolf Schock: E Lucevan le Stelle (Tosca)

Schock (1915-1986) was the most celebrated German tenor of the immediate post-war period and was the first to sing at Covent Garden after the war. It was customary at that time for German and Italian operas to be performed only in English translation, so he had to quickly familiarise himself with librettos in that language. Among his stage partners in such productions there as La Boheme, Madame Butterfly, Magic Flute etc. were Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Joan Hammond. I believe the concert here was in 1965
