The Central Moscow Hippodrome is one of the largest horse racing tracks in Russia and the world’s first trotting race track, with the inaugural race held on Aug. 1, 1834. Today, horses are raced every weekend at the hippodrome, with the occasional camel, greyhound, and dog-sled race thrown in to keep the gamblers entertained. In addition to the racetrack, the hippodrome is home to a riding school and the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Horse Breeding (VNIIK).
