According to the chronicles, Sviyazhsk was founded in 1551 by Khan Shahghali and the following year became the military base for Russian troops participating in the siege of Kazan. Located on the hilly island at the juncture of the Volga and Sviyaga rivers, for centuries it was considered one of the most well-guarded towns. Sviyazhsk is now being restored and rebuilt under a local government program.
