Livin’ Blues was founded by Ted Oberg, Ruud Franssen, Djorn Pool, Niek Dijkhuis and John La Grand. On March 10, 1967, several songs were recorded at the GTB studio in The Hague under the direction of Hans Vermeulen, which only saw the light of day in 1993 via the compilation The Early Blues Sessions, which contained as yet unreleased work from the early years. . While the first single was released through Philips, there are many personnel changes: Niko Kristiansen replaces Djern Pula and Cesar Zuiderwijk replaces Niko Dijkhuis. Gerard Strotbaum replaces Ruud Fransen. In 1969, Gerard Strotbaum was replaced by Henk Smitskamp. The debut Hell’s Session was recorded with Christiansen, Oberg, La Grand, Smitskamp and Zuidervijk. It is a convincing debut full of raw blues rock, which was recorded in just three days at the GTB studio in The Hague. Despite the fact that there is no single on this album, its popularity is growing in the club circuit and the group takes the second place in the Music Express popularity poll in the category of blues bands. “Big Road Blues“ is a Tommy Johnson cover and has a solid blues-rock groove. Featuring lead singer Nick Christiansen’s soulful voice, the rousing and energetic blues track immediately draws listeners into the album’s atmosphere. “Waitin’ On You“ is a BB King cover and is more of a bluesy ballad with a melancholic vibe. It shows the emotional side of the band. “Worried Dreams“ is also a BB King cover and a blues classic. Livin’ Blues brings its own interpretation of the song here. It’s a slow and emotionally charged song that expresses the pain and worry that comes with chasing dreams.
