AS123/2 - Coquette - The Blue Guitar Collection guest Giacomo Smith and Jonathan Stout
Hey guys, here is the 2nd video from the Blue Guitar Collection I’ve recorded in the Usa. We’re playing the standard from 1928 called Coquette.
AS I mentioned before I went to play at the Django in June festival on the east coast with my 4tet (Romain Vuillemin Quartet) and with Génération Django; i was happy to see that Jonathan (the other biggest acoustic archtop nerd on this side of the hemisphere) was also performing there. A good vintage archtop session was in sight.
But a few weeks before i went, the guys from the Archtop Fundation contacted me : they bought Scott Chinery’s famous Blue Archtop collection and they want to guitars to do what they do best : PLAY ! They offer to bring me part of the collection at my gig ! It started when Scott Chinery custom ordered a guitar to the great Jimmy D’Aquisto : it needed to be a specific blue color, and be 18 inches full acoustic archtop. After his death, Scott commissioned about 20 of the best luthiers out there at the time (1996) to build their version of the Blue Guitar (Comins, Collings, Monteleone, Benedetto, Buscarino just to name a few). Please visit their website at or on Instagram @theblueguitars
A quick word on my guest :
-Jonathan Stout is like me, a huge fan of vintage swing and the acoustic archtop guitars that people playing this music were playing back in the days. One of his main influences is Allan Reuss who played acoustic archtops in a very specific chord melody style he came up with. You can follow Jonathan on instagram @campusfive
-Giacomo Smith is a long time friend, we met in 2012 at the Django Festival in Samois sur Seine (and recorded that video He’s moving a lot the jazz scene in London, he’s a killer musician and is performing with many cool bands both as a leader and as a sideman. Please check his Kansas Smitty project. You can follow him on instagram @giacomomoneymoproblems
I’m happy to introduce these 2 insane guitars on the channel :
Jonathan is playing a Monteleone Rocket Convertible guitar, with a Blue Chip TD 40 pick (approx 1mm)
I’m playing a Benedetto La Cremona Azzurra, with a gator Dunlop pick.
Both guitars are strung with Elixir NanoWeb 12-53, and the sound is captured by 2 dpa 4099g, a bluebird and a Neumann TLM 103 microphone.
I Hope you’ll have as much fun listening that we’ve had recording. Please share and subscribe for more.
