Henri Rousseau,The Pont de Grenelle, circa 1891/ Footbridge at Passy, 1890-1891

These are copies of the paintings by this extraordinary artist. Through an oversimplification of shapes and features, he attains a surprising modernity. There is no attempt to reach a naturalistic imitation of nature; the most relevant structural details are remarkably schematic. At the same time there is a subjective relationship with the environment: the viewer feels that she can walk into it, without tension or fear.
