He Was The Next Kevin Durant At 15 Years Old! What Happened To Emoni Bates? Stunted Growth

Today’s feature is a player that I shouldn’t be writing about on a page like this, who in just 2019 was on the cover of the biggest sports magazine possibly to ever exist in sports illustrated, calling him next in line. Born for this was the caption beside Bates, as names like Michael Jordan, Lebron James and Magic Johnson placed underneath, as if to crown the beginning of what was supposed to be the new NBA superstar in the making. He was just 15 years old. At that point I don’t think anyone scoffed at him being placed on the cover, nor compared to the likes of all time great players, because by then the new age media machine of instagram, and the almighty YouTube had for years held him up as what’s next, especially when it comes to his comparisons to Kevin Durant. Fast forward to 2022 and just about all those top rated kids he reclassified to join has passed him by, he’s finished one of the most disappointing seasons a top prospect had maybe ever, at least in a long time, and has recently left Memphis to join one of the worst teams in college basketball in Eastern Michigan, who haven’t reached the NCAA tournament since 1998. Hopefully this story is too soon, but the way it looks, with Emoni the player and the movements made on his behalf in critical times in his career, this could be long overdue.
