Thousands of households in northern Sweden and southern Finland were left without electricity after heavy snowfall, and forecasters have warned that particularly cold temperatures lie ahead in the Baltic Sea region. In Sweden, an electricity supplier said about 3,000 homes were affected and added that power outages could last longer than usual as sending repair workers could be too risky. The Swedish Meteorological Service said the snowfall that hit northern Sweden over the past 24 hours is still ongoing but slowing down. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute has reported snow depths of up to 60 centimeters in northern Sweden.
