To say this song is about the failure of religion is too simplistic a view of this song. When it comes down to it, it is about the failure of vanity. The “wizard“ has an ego and believes he is so special that he can actually fly. In order to prove this, people are enslaved in order to build a tower of stone to be his jumping off point. When the slaves say “I believe/we believe“ we can take it two ways and they are not mutually exclusive. It could mean that they actually believe in this man’s powers. It could also mean that they are just telling themselves that they believe so that they can find purpose in their slavery; the song A Light in the Black gives some insight into this view because there is sadness for time lost (9 years), fear of what might come, and also hope for a potential future.
