Improve Your Jazz Improv Skills with this Essential Daily Exercise. Jazz Tutorial (Bebop Lines Ex.1)
In this jazz tutorial, we take you through a 7-step progressive exercise to practice improvisation. This exercise is suitable for all levels and can be practiced daily as a warm-up, for cleaning up concepts, doing ear training, and memorizing songs. The instructor starts with step one, which involves choosing a standard, in this case, “My Foolish Heart“. Then, they demonstrate how to play the seventh chords broken in eighth notes, in root position, and play the arpeggios going up.
As the exercise progresses, the instructor introduces inversions and challenges the viewer’s ability to make decisions while improvising by removing the rule of playing the complete seventh chord and going up or down. Instead, the viewer can break the chord as they wish. The instructor then introduces a chromatic approach from below on the downbeat of the chord and a trapping the note technique, which involves playing an enclosure before the downbeat and targeting the note on the downbeat.
After going through the 7-step exercise, the instructor encourages the viewer to integrate some “free play“ into their playing and improvise over the entire song using the concepts they just practiced. This way, the viewer can let their ears guide them and see these concepts emerge in their playing without having to think about them consciously.
Overall, this tutorial provides an excellent exercise for jazz musicians to practice improvisation and improve their skills, no matter their level.
It is 7-step exercise you can practice every day. And you can stop on any step (but always start on step 1)
Step 1: Broken chords up in root position
Step 2: Broken chord up in inversions (think of target notes)
Step 3: Up then down
Step 4: Down then up
Step 5: Broken, angular, no need to use all notes in the chord
Step 6: Chromatic approach to the first note from below
Step 7: Enclosure (trapping) Diatonic Chromatic (anticipate)
Don’t forget to practice “free play“ after the last step.
