2023-02-19 | Jeff Prideaux: Robotic Telescopes

Jeff Prideaux shows us several of the various robotic telescopes currently on the market, including the Vespera and Stellina by Vaonis, the EvScope I & 2, Equinox 1 & 2 by Unistellar, and the Dwarf2 by Dwarflabs. Jeff owns a Vespera and a Dwarf2, and he’ll be sharing some first-hand usage experiences. He will also discuss who these scopes are for, what type of objects they can image, and what you can expect from them. Jeff Prideaux has been involved in amateur astronomy off and on since childhood. As a high school junior, he won some Stellafane awards in amateur telescope making. After a long hiatus, he got back into visual astronomy with binoculars and small refractors and has enjoyed using binoviewers. In the last several months, he has acquired a couple different robotic telescopes and enjoys a highly mobile version of imaging. With these scopes, he often drives to darker locations for imaging sessions, where he can set-up and take-down in no time. Jeff is a member of the Richmond Astronomical Society and currently holds the positions of librarian and observatory director for the club’s 7-inch refractor. He enjoys participating in the club’s public outreach events with sharing his 10“ dob, 92mm refractor, or robotic scopes. He was able to show people comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) at a recent public outreach event live-imaging with one of his robotic scopes from a downtown location with a full moon!
