Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for Manfred Mann in the fall of 1964, the song was later made highly successful by Arthur Lee and his band Love. The bass line and guitar riff served as an inspiration to Syd Barrett who later adapted it for Pink Floyd’s “Interstellar Overdrive.“ Definitely one of my favorite 60’s garage band songs, yet another bewildering case of low chart performance for an iconic hit (only #52 on Billboard on June 25, 1966, but made it to #35 on Cash Box on June 18). In the early 80’s a cover of this song would later appear on the same album as “Mickey“ by Toni Basil, Word Of Mouth, which got a lot of play by me in the club where I worked as disk jockey as I did not yet have a copy of the original Arthur Lee version.
