The city was founded as a fortress in 1661 on the Angara River right bank. It is a transport hub on the Trans-Siberian Railway and the Baikal and Siberia federal highways. The city landmarks you will definitely love are the Angara River embankment, Polish - Roman church, Znamensky Monastery, Kazan Church, Angara Icebreaker Museum, Taltsy Architectural and Ethnographic Museum, as well as the Great Siberian Way, which is the longest railway in Russia and in the world.
