When Bodhidharma (the First Patriarch of the Shaolin Fighting Arts) first found the monks, they were weak and often sleepy during meditation. This was the first set of exercises he taught them to strengthen their bodies so they would be able to withstand long hours of meditation without falling asleep. Bodhidharma knew that peace was not in the world and it could only be found within yourself. He believed that this could only be achieved through long hours of meditation which is the essential path towards enlightenment. While I demonstrate the 18 hand movements 3 times continually, notice the hand movements to all points of an eight spoked asterisk. These are the points of which someone may attack you. The asterisk is a good training tool to learn movements and different techniques taught at Christopher N. Geary’s Shaolin Kempo Karate. As of August 18, 2018, this is the only video online of Bodhidharma’s Original 18 Hand Movements. 1. Right vertical front two-knuckle punch to 12:00 0’clock. Palm outward. 2. Left vertical front two-knuckle punch to 12:00 0’clock. Palm outward. 3. Right vertical back two-knuckle punch to 6:00 0’clock. Palm outward. 4. Left vertical back two-knuckle punch to 6:00 0’clock.
