Waterford in the southeast of Ireland, is the country’s oldest city. The Vikings founded Waterford in 914 A.D. and even today parts of its ancient walled core remains.
Compared to Dublin, Cork and Galway fewer tourists visit Waterford. The city can be reached well from Cork as a side trip onwards to Kilkenny / Dublin.
We start our evening walking tour at the Clock Tower near the River Suir, which flows through Waterford City. We head straight into the inner city pass the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and explore the centre with its murals and shopping streets. Most of the shops are closed already so it’s fairly quiet.
After the John Condon Memorial and Christ Church Cathedral we pass the Medieval Museum and check out some areas outside the centre.
When we get back to the Viking Triangle and Reginald’s Tower, a circa-1003 fortification, we continue along the River Suir to end this tour near the Rice bridge across the Waterford Distillery.
