This set of variations on a well-known Japanese folk melody on the theme of cherry blossoms might seem to present a cultural clash. Yet the simple serenity of the music, combined with the versatility of the guitar as a universal instrument, are enhanced by the setting of the Alchzar’s gardens. The orange trees, flowering shrubs, white stucco arches, and a reflecting pool provide a sixteenth-century setting where East and West meet in perfect harmony.
