InterContinental Wonderland Shanghai | The fabulous world’s first underground hotel

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is a luxury hotel located in Songjiang, the root of Shanghai, is 40 minutes from the Shanghai National Exhibition and Convention Center. It sits the landmark of China at 88 meters closer to the heart of earth. The hotel is an awe-inspiring destination bringing together affluent travelers to experience the glamour of InterContinental life in business, leisure and adventure travel. A long abandoned former quarry in one of Shanghai’s distant suburbs hardly seems like a promising site for a new resort. But more than a dozen years and $300 million later, the InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is truly a sight to behold. The 18-story resort by JADE QA Architects hugs the rock face in a harmonious yin and yang design, reimagining the relationship between city and nature. “It was a challenge,” says Martin Jochman, chief architect of the hotel. “This quarry was really a scar on the surface of the earth. It was overgrown and dangerous.” It was up to him to take the unusual site and turn it into something beautiful, and the innovative engineering team came up with 41 registered patents along the way to resolve various engineering difficulties. “We took some big risks because it was totally unknown,” Jochman says. “The hotel comes out of nature.” The glass waterfall, cascading cliffs, and convex and concave wings are unlike anything I’ve seen before. Guests can kayak around the quarry, which has been filled with water, or go rock climbing, scaling 88 meters of cliff face. You can even zipline across the quarry at the theme park next door.
