The Sound of the Rain is the Sound of Chopin
Singer: Sakurai Atsushi
Lyrics: Matsutouya Yumi (YUMING)
Music: GAZEBO
English Translation:
I put my fingers in my ears
To block that sweet song
That makes my heart go numb
Stop it
That Chopin
Will I never see him again?
Rainy days, don’t keep pounding on the window
Rainy days, soothing me like a drug, ah
Resting its head on my knee, the song of the rain
Murmuring “I love you“
Make it stop
That Chopin
If it’s only a memory, I don’t want it anymore
Rainy days, until he’s no longer special to me
Rainy days, the piano plays a secret code
Rainy days whenever I look back into the shadows
Rainy days, in the twilight room
Rainy days, that special person lives in my heart
Rainy days, and Chopin turns the key
Note: The original version of this song was based around a Chopin melody and recorded by the Lebanese-born Italian singer Gazebo, under the title “I Like Chopin.” Matsutouya Yumi, also known as YUMING, the famous Japanese pop singer, wrote Japanese lyrics for the song, which was then re-recorded by another Japanese songstress, Kobayashi Asami. As the original song had been a huge hit in Europe, so the Japanese version became a huge hit in Japan. This is probably not surprising—Chopin is one of the most popular Western classical composers in Japan and often even people not very familiar with classical music claim to love his work.
Sakurai recorded his cover of Kobayashi’s version as a part of his solo project. It appearead as a b-side on the “TAIJI/SMELL” single, and he performed it at his solo live at NHK Hall (you can see it on the DVD, Ai no Wakusei –EXPLOSION–). Performing this song was the first time Sakurai had ever sung a song from a woman’s perspective. He mentioned in a later interview that this was why Imai let him get away with writing lyrics from a female perspective for Buck-Tick’s album Juusankai wa Gekkou. (In fact, the style of Sakurai’s solo live inspired Imai to come up with the goth theme for Juusankai wa Gekkou.
