Taiwan extends mandatory military service to one year - BBC News
Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen has announced all men will be required to serve one year’s military service.
The decision to extend the compulsory military service from four to 12 months comes amid growing tensions with China, which claims the self-ruled island as its territory.
“Peace will not drop from the sky... Taiwan is on the front line of authoritarian expansion,“ President Tsai said.
The new rule, which affects all men over the age of 18, takes effect in January 2024.
