Robert Fripp - Soundscapes

With King Crimson rehearsals breaking up early in the year, Fripp undertook a series of soundscape concerts. The first was an 8-hour live sound installation on the stage of London’s Union Chapel at the end of May. On June 2nd he was in Salisbury Cathedral for four days. These performances weren’t billed as concerts per se but instead took place as visitors ambled around. Many ambled around this man with a guitar in his hand, incredulous at their discovery, taking photos and asking him what he was up to? Nevertheless, despite these less than ideal conditions, the swirl of string tones gently amassing between the North and South transept of the ancient building gradually spread out to fill the entire building - much to the delight of the small number of folks who’d come specifically to listen. More of an installation than a concert as such, some powerful moments cautiously unfurl to great effect.
