History of the Julio-Claudian Dynasty of the Roman Empire

The Julio-Claudian dynasty was the first dynasty to rule the Roman Empire. Octavian, the adopted son of the Dictator for life of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar, became the first emperor of Rome after defeating Julius Caesar’s enemies after his assassination, and the senate changed his name, upon ascension to the throne, to Augustus. The Julio-Claudian dynasty consisted of five emperors: Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and finally Nero. Octavian (later given the title of Augustus) was the first emperor of Rome. Augustus’ reign was a golden age for Rome. He restored and kept the peace in the Empire (the Pax Romana) which allowed the economy, the arts, culture, and agriculture to flourish. Tiberius, the second emperor of Rome didn’t really seem to want to be emperor after his adoptive father, but that was the path chosen for him by his mother and Augustus’ third wife Livia Drusilla. During his time as emperor, Tiberius became increasingly paranoid and cruel, and he ordered many tried for treason based on his often unreasonable fears. At the beginning of Caligula’s reign, he finished off many of the building projects started by Tiberius as well as increased the number of public games and festivals. After only four years on the throne, Caligula was murdered in 41 CE by his own guard and Claudius, the man often ridiculed by Caligula, became the next Roman emperor. He had Caligula’s assassins executed and brought relative peace to Rome. In 54 CE Nero took the throne of the Roman empire and went about cancelling many of Caludius’ decrees and edicts. After the death of Nero, the Juli0-Claudian Dynasty came to an end. — TRAVEL WITH US! — Join WHE on a guided tour of the Treasures of Ancient Greece US — SUPPORT US VIA OUR PATREON— — BUY OUR MERCH — / — CHAPTERS — 0:00 Introduction 0:33 Travel to Ancient Greece with us! 1:08 What is the Julio Claudian Dynasty? 2:20 Rome’s First Emperor: Augustus Caesar 5:11 The Reluctant Emperor Tiberius 7:10 The Short-Lived Emperor Caligula 9:06 The Best of Augustus’ Successors: Claudius 10:45 The Final Julio-Claudian: Nero 13:43 Support us on Patreon! — WANT TO KNOW MORE? — Rome under the Julio-Claudian Dynasty Augustus Tiberius Caligula Claudius Nero Pax Romana Livia Drusilla Reforms of Augustus — WATCH NEXT — Julius Caesar - His Life, Achievements and Assassination Ancient Roman Art and Architecture Ancient Roman Games, Sports and Spectacles The Roman Invasion of Britain with Richard Hingley An Introduction to the Ancient Roman Religion and Mythology — ATTRIBUTIONS — You can find all attribution and credits for images, animations, graphics and music here - The music used in this recording is the intellectual copyright of Michael Levy, a prolific composer for the recreated lyres of antiquity, and used with the creator’s permission.
