Elliott Smith - KALI THE DESTROYER [hypothetical album, 2022] (43:39)

Elliott Smith has so much incredibly beautiful unreleased material out there, or material that was unofficially released as part of the Grand Mal, or material that barely entered public consciousness via b-sides, and I’ve had this odd desire for a while to arrange some of my favorite tracks into a hypothetical final album. If such an album existed, what would it sound like? What would the title be? What would be the cover art? For this hypothetical album, I’ve chosen the name ’KALI THE DESTROYER’, which seemed such a natural choice that it was almost obvious. I like to imagine that at this stage in Elliott’s career, he would have been dealing more openly with the traumas of his past (as in songs like “Abused“) while also finding the healing to find something close to solace, love, peace, or, at least, mere rest in his maturity (“Place Pigalle“ maybe?). But ineluctable is Elliott’s awareness of the effects that his music has had on the people who listen to it, and their consequent expectations (“Suicide Machine“). These are just some of the thoughts I had while arranging the tracks; and, bearing these themes in mind, the name ’KALI THE DESTROYER’ just felt especially fitting. With all this said, I want to be the first to point out that not all of these songs are ones that were recorded near the end of Elliott’s life--nonetheless, I think that all these songs together still would make a banger of an album. For the cover art, I chose this portrait of Elliott Smith that I discovered through the Elliott Smith Gallery group on Facebook. I’m not sure at the moment who originally captured this photo, so please let me know if you happen to know that photographer’s name so that I can credit them. I’ll research more in the meantime.
