One of a series of short films produced in 1969 by Charles Grinker and Mert Koplin, “Which Way USA -- Black Views on Race“ provided brief portraits of many African American leaders including Martin Luther King, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Bobby Seale, and others. This episode features actor Sidney L. Poitier. Poitier is the first black male to win an Academy Award (1964). At one point in the ’60s, Poitier was essentially the only major actor of African descent being cast in leading roles in the American film industry. In 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor.
