This video is - a proof-of-concept English adaptation demo of Hypermatch** - a MV for a “heavenly“ piece - a more nuanced translation that will hopefully reveal (to SHINee’s growing international audience) the deeper dimensions of Taemin’s songs and artistry - a celebration of the return to limelight of an amazing world-class artist ----- Hypermatch* adaptation technique seamlessly communicates original song meaning phrase by phrase, in exact narrative structure flow as the original song, with full respect to the original singer’s vocalization and emotional tone. The goal is to an adaptation that is so seamless it’s possible to sing along (to the original/ source language) as naturally and “emotionally authentic“ as possible in the target language. For writing prompts, I translate original Korean lyrics directly into Chinese and English, to capture every possible nuance that could’ve been lost in official English translations. 이 영어 번역은 원곡 가사의 감정적인 뜻을 한 줄씩 엄밀히 따라가도록 작성되어, 국제 음악 팬들이 원래의 한국어 버전에서 SHINee의 아름다운 보컬과 함께 노래를 즐길 수 있도록 특별히 제작되었습니다. 이러한 엄밀한 가사 작성 방법은 “높은 해상도 감정적 심도“의 작성 프롬프트가 필요합니다. 따라서 저는 원본 가사를 한국어에서 직접 중국어와 영어로 번역하여, 공식 영어 번역에서 종종 누락되는 모든 뉘앙스를 포착할 수 있도록 노력했습니다. ----- Song meaning summary IDENTITY Composed by Steven Lee Lyrics by Jo Yoonkyung Identity is about the pain of forced separation, and having faith in a loving light that brightened up his spirit through trials and tribulation, and will continue to keep him afloat through (anticipated) dark nights of the soul. I’ve adapted the whole Identity, but included just the chorus part in this edit. The overtone is at once earnest, sensuous, restrained yet untamed, wistful yet hopeful. ------ I’ve adapted a dozen plus SHINee group and solo songs using this hyper-conforming technique (which I call Hypermatch**), will share with y’all in the near future. 💝 Writing this form of hyper-conforming adaptation lyrics is super, super time-consuming, but my personal reward is singing along in full emotional sync with the original vocalists. Hypermatch adaptation involves - standard song adaptation requirements (contextual translation, lyrics writing from scratch with close match of rhyming scheme) and on top of that: - multiple conform-to-original constraints: phrase by phrase narrative flow match, syllabic match, vowel match, consonant match, rhythmic and vocal arrangements match, to capture original vocalist emotional delivery and lyrical meaning in full, near-seamless sync. This technique has been entertained in both amateur and professional songwriting circles, but it hasn’t been attempted often enough, especially between languages of distant lineage. For over a year, I have refined the hypermatch technique, and adapted close to a hundred K-pop, J-pop, C-pop songs using this technique. I’ll be making more videos for selected adaptations as proof of concept. This passion project can be technically exhausting, but my desire to communicate the vast potential of this creative possibility is strong.
