It was designed to replace the PzKpfw III and PzKpfw IV , so that the Panzerwaffe could outperform the Soviet T-34/76 and KV tanks , and recent Allied vehicles._* *_The angular lines broke with the German design tradition and in general terms, the silhouette was inspired by that of the T-34 .
