On February 3, 1915, the second assault on the Osovets fortress began. After six days of fighting, the German units managed to occupy the first frontier of Russian defense. This allowed the full use of heavy German artillery. Siege weapons were thrown to the fortress, including Skoda mortars with a caliber of 305 mm, as well as the Big Berts with a caliber of 420 mm. The General Staff of the Russian Army, knowing about the great destruction, fires and heavy casualties among the personnel, set the units defending Osovets to hold out for 48 hours. Russian units lasted half a year. On August 6, 1915, the situation at the front was such that its further defense of the fortress made no sense.
