M1 ABRAMS vs OBJECT 775 Pancake Tank | Depleted Uranium APFSDS | Armour Penetration Simulation
The Soviet Object 775 had an exceptionally low profile as it only had a crew of 2 and featured an autoloader. It also had some of the strongest armour of its time, to the extent that the upper glacis would only be vulnerable to APFSDS projectiles which entered service ~15 years after the Object 775 was being developed.
While it could be considered unfair to show it up against an Abrams, which entered service more than 10 years after the Object 775 was developed, it was chosen to show just how strong the armour was. (For comparison, the most powerful NATO kinetic round of the 1960’s - late 70’s was the Chieftain’s L15 APDS projectile, which wouldnt even be able to perforate the top 90mm plate).
The Rolled Homogenous Armour (RHA) has been modelled as 300BHN hardness, similar to the T-64A and T-72 Ural. The M774 projectile core is Depleted Uranium, being ~26.5 x 345mm. A test model was made first, where the projectile’s penetration matched the Lanz-Odermatt predictions:
At 75°, the projectile can perforate ~114mm of 300BHN RHA (440mm LoS), meaning that it would have no chance against the 120mm of RHA and 70mm of textolite.
