The King, Queen and Prince of Wales are to formally welcome the Emperor and Empress of Japan to Britain today, in a State Visit without the Princess of Wales or the Princess Royal. Emperor Naruhito and his wife Empress Masako landed in the UK this weekend, undertaking a private programme that has seen him visit the Thames Barrier after he became fascinated by it during his studies at Oxford. The Emperor has long links with the British Royal Family, previously hosted by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at Balmoral and taught to fly fish by the young Prince Charles.
