Pappano Conducts Mahler and Strauss

Sir Antonio Pappano, newly appointed Chief Conductor Designate of the London Symphony Orchestra, makes his first appearance at the Royal College of Music since 2020. Opening the programme, RCM Concerto Competition winners Méline Le Calvez and Francis Bushell take on Strauss‘ lyrical woodwind duet with orchestra, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen‘s tale The Princess and the Swineherd, and Madeline Boreham performs four of Strauss‘ most beautiful songs with orchestra. Originally billed as a ‘symphonic poem‘, Mahler‘s First Symphony is epic in scale. Expanding from the gentle cuckoo calls of its opening to a funereal setting of Frère Jacques, the ‘lightning bolts‘ of the final movement bring the symphony to a valiant conclusion.
