Chemical weathering involves chemical reactions within the minerals inside rocks. Water, acids, and some gases contribute to chemical weathering. Mechanical weathering, or physical weathering, is caused by frost or ice, moving water, or the heat of the sun. The most common type of weathering involves water freezing in cracks in rocks. Speaking of the Grand Canyon, scientists believe it was caused by the Colorado River wearing down the rocks over the course of a long period of time. Biological weathering happens when plants and animals, as well as other living things, cause rocks to be broken into smaller pieces.
