Excerpted from Pink Martini’s live appearance on German television, from the JazzOpen Stuttgart festival, recorded on July 19, 2010. “Ninna nanna“ is an original single from Pink Martini’s fourth studio album “Splendor in the Grass,“ written and sung in Neapolitan, a language spoken by 7 or 8 million people in portions of Southern Italy. A songwriting collaboration between Alba Clemente and Massimo Audiello, close friends of Thomas Lauderdale and China Forbes, “Ninna nanna“ is a song about a sleeping sailor, and the mermaid who loves him. The song also features Dan Faehnle on acoustic guitar, Timothy Nishimoto on backup vocals, Gavin Bondy on flugelhorn, and Robert Taylor on trombone.
