““ In his music, Penderecki has frequently demonstrated his special attitude to the violin – the instrument he diligently studied in his youth. As a composer and conductor, he has worked with great violin virtuosi. The mastery of Anne-Sophie Mutter, with whom he performed Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in 1988 in Lucerne, inspired him to write his Violin Concerto No. 2 (1992–95). In the meantime, the composer became fascinated by the aesthetic idea of claritas, which to some extent influenced the final shape of the new concerto. In comparison with the one written for Isaac Stern, his new work was much lighter in both texture and expression.
