Act I: The Lake South, The River North. A story beginning at the turn of the 20th century, following the birth and life of a naive boy.
[Battesimo del Fuoco, The Lake South, City Escape]
A prostitute by the name of Terri (the Flame) gives birth to a child, Hunter (The Fire), and lights her room on fire in the brothel. She takes her child and escapes the building out the window, using the burning room as a distraction. She jumps into the River to escape the men chasing after her, eventually escaping the City.
[The Inquiry of Ms. Terri]
Hunter is raised in a cottage by the Lake in complete isolation from the world, and ignorant to what his mother was. She wants to go back and burn the entire brothel, the Dime, to the ground, but knows that she can’t. She takes her time with Hunter to teach him how to treat women properly, continuing to lie to him about what she is, just as she lies to her clients.
[1878]
They grow up together for many years, Hunter is now an adult, and Terri returns to the City. She tells Hunter never to walk further than the old tree by the Lake, never to walk into the forest, and that she will return soon. Hunter wishes he could learn about his mother’s past, as he realizes that there are things being hidden from him. He continues to grow curious about not only his mother, but the rest of the world that lies beyond the Tree. He’s realizing his isolation.
[The Pimp and the Priest]
Back in the City, Terri is forced into being reunited with the Pimp and the Priest. The two-faced manipulative man that has caused her so much suffering already.
Terri returns home in a carriage, greeting her child with fresh food and clothing. Hunter goes out and builds bear traps, but falls into one of them after dropping the knife Terri gave him. He thinks he’ll be stuck there forever, that this is how he’ll die, and begins to wonder if this is what the world is really like.
[His Hands Matched His Tongue]
An unknown man approaches him in the hole and helps him out. Hunter sees that the man’s hands are covered in blood, and questions what happened. The man only says it’s something he regrets. The man tells Hunter to go home and to always love his mother, because some day she will be gone.
Hunter returns home and tells her that he loves her.
[The River North]
