Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a frigate off to the Atlantic Ocean with new generation hypersonic cruise missiles on Wednesday in an apparent signal to the West that it would not back down on its ongoing “special military operation“ in Ukraine. Its defence ministry later released footage of what it said was the frigate armed with Zircon missiles leaving a naval base in Severomorsk. Putin applauded the “defence industry complex“ for creating and starting mass production “of this unique weapon.“ “As I’ve said already, there is no equivalent in any country in the world,“ he said while speaking with military and defence officials. Russia, China and the U.S. are in a race to develop hypersonic weapons, which are seen as a way to gain an edge over adversaries because of their speed and maneuverability.
