Trudeau says “fringe minority“ in trucker convoy with “unacceptable views“ don’t represent Canadians

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau remarked on the “Freedom convoy“ heading to Ottawa this week, saying Wednesday that the “fringe minority“ in the truck convoy with “unacceptable views“ do not represent the way most Canadians feel. The comments came on the heels of reporting by Global News that far-right and white nationalist groups saw the convoy as an opportunity. Though truck convoy organizers have been adamant these extremists don’t represent the position of the protesters. The convoy initially kicked off with a focus on opposing vaccine mandates, especially the one aimed at truckers implemented by the Canadian government this month, though the message behind the convoy has become muddled as it moved through Canada. The government’s mandate requires truckers crossing the border from the U.S. to be fully vaccinated to avoid a 14-day quarantine. The U.S. also instituted its own ban on unvaccinated truck drivers a week after Canada’s went into effect.
