After almost a year of experimenting, I’ve gotten a result that I’m somewhat happy with. I now truly believe that this is the best audio source for this show as of now. For the EQ, I was attempting to get a similar sound to the Rags To Rhapsody Earl’s Court multitrack mixes, but I really like the general sound of Queen II Rainbow’s official mix, so I also took inspiration there. Keep in mind, I can do my best but I can’t work magic. This is a mono VHS tape from decades ago, I can’t compete with a mix done using the multitracks. Houston ’77 has a much greater frequency response, which is why it sounds so much better than EC. The hi-hat sounds fantastic on that tape, and it sounds terrible on Earl’s Court. This the most that I can do without a better source or the multitrack itself, so please keep your expectations realistic. I manually removed stray clicks and pops from the original VHS transfer, of which there were hundreds. I removed hum and hiss where I could. It’s night and day at spots where the instruments get quieter, most especially the Liar intro. The consistent line of high pitched interference throughout the whole show was removed as well. I removed flutter and wavering tape speeds to the best of my ability, most notable occasion being the intro to White Queen, but there were other moments where the tape had issues, most notably the piano intro of ITLOGR and the ending of BoRhap. I did not fix the beginning of Bohemian Rhapsody’s opera tape as it was actually like that at the show, proven by the AUD. You may notice a sort of phasing hiss, I actually kept that because it’s the sound of Brian’s amp. It was part of the actual show, so I opted to keep it. 90% of the audio used comes from the same copy, but I used alternative transfers for places where the primary source could not be used, like the Overture, which was heavily noise reduced. I also used the official release of You Take My Breath Away, dubbing in the amp explosion using the primary copy. I decided not to use all of the HQ snippets of individual songs, as too many would make for an inconsistent sound. For example, in Bring Back That Leroy Brown, there’s no way that I could seamlessly transition the mono audio into the stereo Magic Years snippet in the middle of the song without it sounding jarring. Procession is a modification of Queen II’s 2011 remaster. For authenticity reasons, I genuinely tried to salvage the original audio of Procession used on the VHS, but it is damaged beyond repair. There is nothing I can do for audio THAT damaged. As shown on some copies of the video feed, and on the audience recording, Queen actually used an extended mix of Procession for this show, longer than Queen II’s. As far as I know, this mix is exclusive to Earl’s Court. This fact seems to have slipped by most people, and no previous Earl’s Court merges that I know of attempt to recreate it. Unfortunately, all sources are cut off a little bit at the beginning of Procession, so I had no means of 100% accurately replicating the extended version, but I did as much as I could. Video beautifully done by my trusty friend Dry Paint Dealer Undr, using Chief Mouse’s excellent 2018 remaster as a base. My audio has different timing than the standard Miracle Express transfer, so a simple drag and drop solution could not be used. DPDU excellently synced the CM footage to my audio. Mild colour adjustments were done as well as the addition of some official footage released by Queen over the years.
