Steve Smith - Improvised Snare Drum Solo in SEVEN

Spending time at Tim Northup’s Drum Museum in Oneonta, NY, is always so much fun. During my visit on November 19, 2021, I discovered that playing this 1965 Slingerland snare drum was magic! The drum has an amazing dynamic range and a beautiful sound on all areas of the surface, and the response is so immediate it almost plays itself! I came up with an improvised solo in SEVEN that makes use of quite a few triple strokes in each hand. Using triple strokes, in triplets and 8th notes, to play various rhythms is an idea I’ve been working on lately, which has been helping me gain more “stick control.“ - Steve Smith
