Red alert has been issued in 7 districts of Gujarat. Schools in many districts have been closed due to heavy rains in the state. Rajkot and Vadodara have received over 254 mm (10 inches) of rain in 24 hours. Many areas of the city and underground passages have been flooded. Motorists and residents have faced difficulties in moving. The first floors of over ten thousand houses have been flooded. The water level in low-lying areas of the cities has reached up to one and a half meters. Also major cities like Ahmedabad and Jamnagar were also badly affected. Rains in Surat also resulted in river water reaching the Kadarsa Nala area through sewer drains. Due to flooding in front of people’s houses and shops, cars parked there were also submerged. Orange alert has been issued in 22 districts and yellow alert in 4 districts. The release of 250,000 cubic metres of water from the Ukai Dam has caused the water level in the Tapi River to rise. Meanwhile, Sardar Sarovar dam was filled to the brim. Authorities were forced to open 15 gates of the dam and water gushed into the Narmada river. The administration has issued warning notices to 42 villages of Bharucha, Vadodara and Narmada on both banks of the Narmada river. Around 7,000 villages across the state have been affected by power outages. A total of 523 roads have been closed in Surat, Navsari, Valsad, Tapi Dang and Chotaudepur districts of the state. Heavy rains have been reported in 244 talukas of 33 districts across the state. Out of the 206 reservoirs in the state, 59 are 100% full. More than 7 rivers are in overflowing condition, causing flooding in the surrounding areas. Authorities are taking all possible measures to provide relief to the affected people. As many as 13 NDRF and 22 SDRF teams have been deployed in the affected districts. These teams are helping in the rescue operations. The floods may worsen as rains are still continuing.
