Is it true that there were no doorknobs until a young black man invented them in 1878?

The number of inventions credited to black people increases exponentially each year during Black History Month. Would anybody in his senses really believe the latest such fantasy; that until a 16 year-old African American dreamed up the idea, there were no such things as doorknobs?
