The Armada Revolt (1893) - Republican Government of Floriano Vieira Peixoto Marshall Floriano Peixoto betrayed the Empire. By means of a constitutional provision, thirteen officers sent a Manifesto to President Floriano Peixoto demanding new elections. Floriano ordered the immediate arrest of these leaders. It was clear that the Navy, Armada, had little prestige when compared to the army. This triggered the beginning of the Revolt. Led by Custodio de Melo, former Minister of the Navy, several armored units entered into conflict with the army on September 13, 1893, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Without any chance of victory, the armed units turned to the south of the country where they tried unsuccessfully to win the support of the Southerners.
