G. MAHLER “Urlicht“ (Primal Light) for quintet of double basses
Artists (from left to right):
Daniel Matthewes (double bass 3)
Anna Stelzner (double bass 2)
Filipe Dandalo (double bass 1)
Lorenz Weighart (double bass 4)
Božo Paradžik (double bass 5)
Gustav Mahler’s famous orchestral composition “Urlicht“ (Eng. “Primal Light“), used once as fourth movement in his Symphony No 2 “Resurrection“ and once again a few years later in “Des Knaben Wunderhorn“.
I hope you will enjoy this music of eternal beauty in my chamber music version, instrumented for five double basses. Credits and compliments to my talented students from Hochschule Freiburg from the generation 2021/22 for this wonderful performance of this difficult and tricky piece.
Recorded in July 2022 during the live performance / public examination of Filipe Dandalo for the final degree “Master of Arts in Music“. My own contribution as a player was a pure coincidence, I have replaced another student whose train connection made it impossible to arrive to Freiburg on time.
