Located on a plateau overlooking the Tauber River, Rothenburg ob der Tauber is one of the prettiest towns of Bavaria, Germany. It is well known for its well-preserved medieval old town, a destination for tourists from around the world, and is part of the popular Romantic Road through southern Germany. First mentioned as Rotinbure in the 9th century, it developed around a Hohenstaufen fortress and was a free imperial city from 1274 until 1803. The name “Rothenburg ob der Tauber“ is German for “Red castle above the Tauber“.
