Custom Built an Adventure Bike for Her (Temple Cycles)
Wen had longed for a bike that she can trust, a bike that can do it all, a companion on the road that can last a lifetime. So, I set out to build her dream bike from scratch, which I have not done before.
Last Christmas, I bought a frameset from a local bike brand in Bristol @templecycles4062, having admired their elegant and minimal design since they started back in 2014. I sourced the bike parts from different retailers over the winter months before I began the ultimate build in May 2023. I made many mistakes along the way, which I wish to share in a bike build series perhaps.
I had gone for the Lichen Green and with a hint of red theme, which somewhat resembles the Prickly Pear Cactus that I have come across in the Canary Island. And this bike should hopefully resembles the characteristic of the cacti, being able to shine and survive around their harsh natural habitat.
I am grateful to have the @parktool channel around for most of their comprehensive tutorial videos, especially the wheel building series which made the process less intimidating. I am also lucky to have my workplace at Zedify letting me use the essential tools eg. truing stand, spoke tension meter to complete my wheel build, alongside with my coworker Jon’s guidance making sure all goes well.
A few of the notable parts for this custom build as below:
- Nitto B903 Bullmoose Bar from @bluelugbikeshop
- MKS BS-7 Pedals - Copper from @bluelugbikeshop
- Dia Compe SS6 Brake Lever from @bluelugbikeshop
- Microshift SL-T09 Thumb Shifters 9 Speed by @microSHIFTTECH
- Front disc hub 6-bolt rotor interface by @velo_orange
- Retro-Style Stainless Wound Gear Cable Kit by @velo_orange
- Jagwire Universal Sport Brake Cable Kit - Sterling Silver by @JagwireUSA
- Halo Vapour 29 Inch rims by @HaloWheels
- Spokes and Nipples from folks at @RyanBuildsWheels
- Schwalbe G-One Allround Tyres 700c x 40mm by @SchwalbeBikeTires
- Brooks B17 Special Short from Facebook Market
- Disc rotors A2Z Teppan Yaki SP5 Floating Rotor - 160mm Red
Thank you for watching! I enjoyed this first custom-built process as much as Wen enjoyed riding it! Wen ended up naming it as “Tempeh“! Until now, I still cannot take my eyes of it, admiring it whenever I walk passed it at the hallway. Tempeh has gone for a long weekend bikepacking trip, and I have a video project lining up for that trip! Stay tuned! :)
