A new tropical storm is developing near the Ogasawara island chain of Japan, and could ramp up to typhoon status fairly soon as it takes a swipe at Japan. The storm is expected to peak as a typhoon, and could become a little stronger before weak steering leads to a very uncertain forecast. A landfall on eastern Honshu, Japan, cannot be ruled out.
Tropical Storm Debby is making landfall in South Carolina, northeast of Charleston. The very broad storm continues to move northwesterly at a slow pace, and heavy rainfall continues on the northern side of the storm. Flooding risk continues for the southeast United States.
Elsewhere, an area of interest could develop next week on approach to the Leeward Islands and eastern Caribbean region, as well as a brief spin-up in the far eastern Pacific in the next few days.
More areas of interest could become tropical cyclones in the Western Pacific, with potential further impacts in Japan and China.
