St. Petersburg, Russia (later Leningrad, Soviet Union / USSR). Mobilisation of Russian Army at start of World War One (July 29 - 31, 1914). MS 2 men measuring horse’s height. Pan on scene in square: officers, soldiers and horses being led past crowd of civilians. Wider shot same. Soldiers on horses ride down city street. Men walking down the street, some already wearing Russian Army uniform, others wearing civilian clothes - they appear to be new recruits to army. Women and children walk alongside them. All the people are high spirits, one man clowns about for camera, behaving as if drunk. War rally in a big square, pan on some of crowd. Wider shot of square, people hold signs, flags and pictures of the Tzar. Several low angled LS of Tzar Nicholas II on balcony, Tsarina joins him (these shots are from a long distance away).
