J.S. Bach - “Das alte Jahr vergangen ist” BWV 614 (Orgelbüchlein)

This video is featuring Bach’s chorale prelude “Das alte Jahr vergangen ist” BWV 614, excerpt from the Orgelbüchlein. “The old year has passed away; We thank Thee, Lord Jesu Christ, That Thou hast kept us through the year when danger and distress were near”. Text by anonymous - Melody by (1546-1613). “It is a sad meditation in the twilight of the last evening of the year” (Albert Schweitzer). An intense chromaticism, in the tenor, contralto and pedal, symbolically renders motifs of acute pain. In the soprano, the elegant flowering of notes enriches this fascinating page with melancholic poetry, in which one no longer knows whether to admire the technical compositional value or the sublime quality of inspiration, in the simplicity of the means. On the last bar the expressive appoggiaturas are giving the sensation of the falling year, slowly and wearily giving in to the time that passes.
