Liszt: Rhapsodie Espagnole, (Marshev)

Marshev isn’t particularly well-known as a pianist, but his playing is consistently excellent, displaying the kind of big-hearted, unforced virtuosity that Gilels was famed for. Even in an unabashed crowd-pleaser like the Rhapsodie Espagnole, the technical feats are always subservient to the musical demands: the sound is beautifully paragraphed, and the climaxes as excitingly physical as the softer moments are tender.
