Protesters Take To Streets In Colombia, Coming Out Against 50% Increase In Gasoline Prices
In Colombia’s major cities, thousands of demonstrators in cars and motorbikes took to the streets to voice their opposition to recent gasoline price increases, which have significantly raised fuel costs.
Protesters argue that these regular price hikes, implemented by Colombia’s first leftist government, strain small businesses and could lead to higher food prices.
President Gustavo Petro’s administration counters this by asserting that the annual $11 billion gasoline subsidies must be discontinued to address debts owed to the national oil company Ecopetrol, the primary fuel producer, and to redirect resources towards social initiatives.
