Haydn: Symphony No. 89 in F Major

Symphony No. 89 in F major, Hoboken I/89, composed by Joseph Haydn in 1787, was performed under the patronage of Nikolaus Esterházy at Esterháza. It is sometimes called “The Letter W,“ referring to an older cataloging method of Haydn’s symphonies. The second and fourth movements are derived from a Concerto for Lire Organizzata in F, Hob. VIIh/5, which Haydn composed in 1786 for Ferdinand IV, King of Naples. To make the concertos accessible to other orchestras, Haydn arranged them to feature flute and oboe as solo instruments instead of the original lire. Similar adaptations were made when integrating these movements into the symphony, giving it a distinct wind band character.
